Cyprus and the 90/180 Rule: The Separate Allowance UK Travellers Still Get (2026)

Here is a fact that surprises even seasoned Schengen-watchers: Cyprus is not in the Schengen area, and as of August 2026 its days do not count against your 90/180 allowance. For UK travellers rationing Schengen days, Cyprus is effectively a separate 90-day pool, and for tax planners it offers one of Europe's most distinctive residency rules. The current position

UK visitors can stay in Cyprus visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, but because Cyprus is outside Schengen, that allowance is independent of the Schengen count (GOV.UK, Cyprus entry requirements). A traveller at their Schengen limit can decamp to Cyprus without burning Schengen days, and days in Cyprus do not appear in the EES ledger the Schengen borders share. Winter-sun snowbirds have quietly used this for years.

The clock: Schengen accession is targeted for 2026

Cyprus has publicly committed to joining Schengen, with 2026 the stated target (Cyprus Mail), though accession requires member-state approval and is not yet legally effective. When it happens, Cyprus days fold into the common 90/180 count and the separate pool disappears. The 60-day tax rule

Cyprus offers two routes to tax residency: the standard 183-day rule, and the distinctive 60-day rule, under which you can be Cyprus tax resident with just 60 days there, if you are not tax resident anywhere else, spend no more than 183 days in any other single country, and maintain genuine Cyprus ties (a permanent home plus business or employment there). Combined with Cyprus's non-dom regime for investment income, this is why the island features in so many relocation plans, and why it demands precise multi-country day counting: the 60-day route fails if any other country's count reaches 184.
