Greece's British following built holiday-home roots decades before Brexit complicated the arithmetic. The baseline is standard: 90 days in any 180 across the whole Schengen area, counted automatically at the border. The Greek specifics worth knowing are the FIP visa and the tax line. Updated 5 August 2026.
The visa-free position
No visa for short stays: 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, shared across Schengen (see our 90/180 guide for UK citizens; official framing at GOV.UK, Greece entry requirements). The EES registers every crossing and detects overstays automatically (European Commission, Entry/Exit System).
Staying longer
- Financially independent person (FIP) visa. Greece's passive-income residence route: demonstrate stable income above the current threshold (raised in recent years; verify before planning), plus accommodation and health cover, with no Greek employment.
- Golden visa. Residence via property investment still exists, but minimum investment levels rose sharply and vary by region; treat any figure you read as provisional and check current rules.
Applications run through Greek consulates; see the Greek MFA visa pages for current requirements.
The tax line
Spending more than 183 days in Greece in a year generally makes you Greek tax resident, taxable on worldwide income, with centre-of-vital-interests tests behind it. Greece also operates alternative regimes for pensioners and investors; all of them still start from establishing residence. The day log decides the close cases: see the dual residency guide.
