Portugal spent a decade marketing itself to British retirees and remote workers, and the pull survived Brexit even if the paperwork did not. The baseline is now the same as everywhere in Schengen: 90 days in any 180, counted automatically at the border. Here is the Portugal-specific picture: the visa routes that matter, and the honest state of the tax perks everyone still asks about. Updated 5 August 2026.
The visa-free position
British passport holders need no visa for short stays: 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, shared across all 29 Schengen countries (mechanics in our 90/180 guide for UK citizens; official framing at GOV.UK, Portugal entry requirements). Since 10 April 2026 the EU Entry/Exit System registers every entry and exit with biometrics and detects overstays automatically (European Commission, Entry/Exit System).
Staying longer: D7 and the digital nomad visa
- D7 visa. Portugal's passive-income route, aimed at retirees and others with stable income from pensions, rents or investments. Leads to a residence permit and, in time, eligibility for permanent residence.
- Digital nomad visa (D8). For remote workers employed by, or invoicing, companies outside Portugal, with a monthly income threshold set as a multiple of the Portuguese minimum wage.
Both are applied for through Portuguese consulates; requirements and thresholds change, so verify against the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs visa portal before planning around either. See also our guide to the UK-Portugal tax border.
The tax position, honestly
The famous NHR regime is closed to new entrants: it was wound down from 2024, and the successor regime (the "IFICI", often called NHR 2.0) is far narrower, aimed at specific scientific, academic and qualifying professional roles rather than retirees at large. Anyone selling you Portugal on "pay no tax on your pension" is describing the last decade, not this one. The structural rule is the usual one: 183 days in Portugal in any 12-month period (or a habitual residence there) generally makes you Portuguese tax resident, taxable on worldwide income. The UK-Portugal treaty tie-breakers then decide close cases, on evidence of where you actually were.
Count it, do not estimate it

For the ongoing count, the Days Monitor iPhone app tracks your days automatically, warns before you reach 90, and lets you add a separate 183-day rule for Portugal so the immigration clock and the tax clock run side by side.
